Their special sauce has finally been bottled and the strategies described in The Brave Athlete promise to help athletes of all abilities become dirty fast.†―Tim Don, World Champion triathlete“Forget marginal gains, Dr. Simon Marshall understands the most important part of performance: the athlete’s mind. His expertise is an invaluable resource to help athletes master theirs.†―David Bailey, PhD, Head of Performance at BMC Racing Team“My training background and philosophy evolved under the coaching of Lesley and the mental slapping of Simon.†―Jessica Cerra, professional cyclist“I have admired Dr. Simon Marshall’s talent as a scientist and a communicator for more than two decades. In The Brave Athlete, he brings this talent to the fore as he translates psychological science into meaningful strategies to help athletes become more confident, motivated, and calm.†―Dr. Kirsten Davison, Professor of Public Health, Harvard University“At the Leeds Triathlon Centre, we pay as much attention to psychology as we do to physiology. Few things are simple in sport but in The Brave Athlete, Simon and Lesley tackle the complexities of getting the best from yourself in a clear and engaging way.†―Jack Maitland, Head Triathlon Coach, Leeds Beckett University“The Brave Athlete will take you deep inside yourself so that you can identify what you thought were your limits and, with Simon and Lesley’s help, smash them to smithereens.†―Bob Babbitt, host of Babbittville Radio, USA Triathlon Hall of Fame inductee“Simon and Lesley get to the heart of what it takes to be a brave athlete. It’s about creating a mindset that goes to bat for you rather than against you. The Brave Athlete is an invaluable guide to help you sort your head out. Plus it’s funny. Really bloody funny.†―Flora Duffy, World Champion triathlete“Marshall and Paterson, in some kind of post-Western duo, limn their own version of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Only the guns and whiskey are replaced with doctoral degrees and world titles. In The Brave Athlete they challenge the reader to draw swords on the psychic battlefields of sport but do so with the gift of Continental mirth and compassion.†―Scott Tinley, two-time Ironman World Champion, author, and teacher“Working with Lesley and Simon has been one of the biggest life-changing experiences.†―Mauricio Méndez, XTERRA World Champion and Ironman 70.3 champion“Simon and Lesley bring years of training at the world-class level, in multiple sports, together with years of working in academia―all in the real world.†―Janel Holcomb, professional cyclists and coach“Lesley's passion for helping others grow and enjoy a deeper sense of satisfaction with their lives is evident in everything she does. In her book, she expertly addresses the concerns and setbacks so many people face in their pursuits, and outlines a simple and elegant strategy for helping anyone become their very best.†―Ben Hoffman, Professional Triathlete and Ironman Champion“I always struggled with my inner self and demons during races. Simon taught me not only how to deal with those demons, but how to manipulate them in such a way to take my racing to an entirely different level.†―Kyle Hummel, Ironman 70.3 Age Group World Champion“The formula for this book is a winner and can be applied to any challenging situation.†―Dr. Jacqueline Kerr, Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health, University of California at San Diego“Dr. Simon Marshall and World Champion Lesley Paterson remind us that that the best kind of sport psychology is when evidence-based science meets the minds of real athletes. This book shows us how to cope with common demons that threaten to disrupt our performances and enjoyment of sport.†―Dr. Alison Pope-Rhodius, Professor & Chair, Sport Psychology, JFK University“Combining their experience in triathlon, psychology, and writing, Lesley and Simon are a force to be reckoned with. They’re brilliant and hilarious.†―Mitch Thrower, Founder and Chairman of Events.com, Author, and 22x Ironman Triathlete“The tools I've learned from Simon are simply priceless, and to have it all encapsulated into a book for everyone to read is critical reading for any athlete looking to perform at their very best.†―Amy Dixon, Paralympic Hopeful, ITU World Ranking: #5“Lesley has also shown me the ability to suffer like no other with the strategies outlined in The Brave Athlete. With these skills, neither family or sport is jeopardized, bringing a much-needed balance to my life.†―Brandon Mills, age-group mountain biker“Dr. Marshall has such way of explaining the human mind, in the simplest terms and why we think the way we do. Pretty good stuff, but I think this was pretty basic. I liked the writing, and liked the perspective provided by a world-class athlete; but overall, I did not find much new for me. I surely think younger (less experienced?) athletes could pick up several nuggets of wisdom here, so if you are eager to find an "edge" or solve a mental/emotional "weakness" in your game, then by all means give this book a read.Mental training, and controlling emotions are a HUGE part of achievement in many areas of life, so I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book-it is a fun and easy read, but it just didn't give me a lot of new information.
A friend of mine posted an online comment about this book that caught my attention so I decided to read it. My friend is a much better athlete than I am and competes in marathons and triathlons throughout the year, so I expected this book to be aimed at elite athletes. I was a little intimidated, but decided to read it, anyway. I'm glad I did. I believe this book can be very helpful to athletes at all levels; not just elites. The authors explain that you are controlled mentally by three parts of your brain that each influence your decisions differently. They call the first your 'chimp brain' which is your limbic system and makes fight or flight decisions to help you react to situations immediately. Next is your professor brain, which is your frontal cortex and waits to gather facts before making decisions. The third is your computer brain, which uses many regions of your brain, including memory, to help determine the best decision. When you try to motivate yourself to get out and train or race, deal with injuries, or when you actually get out to race, your different brains fight each other for control. Your decisions are based on which brain wins. This book goes into detail about how to tell which brain is 'winning' and how to ensure you are making the best decision. From my description, you might think it is best if the computer brain always wins. That's not really always the case, though, and this book explains why. It's a great book for any athlete who ever thinks about what they're doing. As you might expect from the title, this book is full of 'adult language.' That, to me, is its one drawback. Maybe the authors thought the language would make their book more conversive or 'cool.' I just think that was unnecessary and could turn some readers off. That's the only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five.
A phenomenal read... and fun too! Don't think it is just for athletes. From entrepreneurs to students to stay-at-home moms, this book helps you get in your own head and figure out what is holding you back from reaching your goals.
Not your normal motivational read - and that is a good thing!!! This book will make you feel normal in your own everyday thoughts, athlete or not. It will not only help you be a better athlete, but also a better parent, friend and spouse. Great ideas that are applicable in everyday life. It will keep you interested, and laughing along the way. I even highlighted a few of the chapters for my own 12 year old to help him with skills in sports (and life!). You will read it over and over and it is the perfect book for your nightstand.
I was skeptical about their metaphor of a chimp brain, at first. I worried it would be pop psycho-babble crap like "alpha dogs" among dog trainers. But the authors' metaphor won me over because they use it so efficiently and consistently across the book. And I really appreciate that the authors know endurance sports so well.
Couldn't put this book down! It is truly a must-read for all athletes, from first time 5k runner to seasoned ironman triathletes. The Brave Athlete covers the basics of your emotional and mental drivers (aka the chimp, the professor and the soulless computer), and how they come into play when facing the struggles in sports: race anxiety, body image issues, injury coping, sucking-up the suck and so on. Using this information and plenty of real-life stories, Dr. Marshall provides easy to understand guidelines on how (you guessed it) to calm down and rise to the occasion. Reading the book and working through the exercises helped me a lot dealing with my anxiety before race starts and finding the mental toughness to push through when it gets hard. The Brave Athlete is written in the context of endurance sports, but really it's applicable to pretty much life in general. Just replace "swim start" with "new professional endeavor" or "first date" and so on... Icing on the cake: The Brave Athlete is hilariously funny written and very entertaining to read.
Good, light read for athletes who are competitive, but looking for that mental edge to pull them out of a slump!
I do not usually recommend a book but this book is pretty good, for the title you my think what the heck is this all about. well I purchase this book and I do not regret it, is down to earth and what they are actually telling you is really good. If you like to race any sport, I would definitely recommend it.
